Claudia’s Ghost is a Haint

Claudia is a haint, according to African American folklore.

Intro:

I have been watching the show ‘Vampire Lestat’. I have always been a big fan of the movies adapted from Anne Rice’s books, especially ‘Queen of the Damned’ (RIP to Aaliyah). So, imagine my reaction when the scene when Merrick Mayfair comes on, finding out she is not only a witch (like in the books), but a practitioner of Voodoo.

Finding media where Voodoo and (even more so) Hoodoo are practiced is few and far between. I was hoping, since Louis is from New Orleans and ‘Mayfair Witches’, another Anne Rice adaptation, setting mainly takes place there Voodoo would eventually pop up.

However, it was the séance that caught my eye. Claudia is invoked on behalf of Louis and Lestat. There was one question that lingered in my mind. Is Claudia a haint?

What is a Haint

Before getting into that, I have to explain what exactly a haint is. It’s a term found in the Southern United States, coming from African Americans, especially attributed to the Gullah/Geechee people. To put it plain, a haint is a restless or malevolent spirit or ghost. It can be a ghost that, for one reason or another, cannot pass on to the next plane of existence.

However, they aren’t just entities that were once human; they are also associated with beings that are non-human that can take the form of humans or other things. According to lore, they usually don’t have any good intent. They tend to do things like playing tricks to feed on people’s energy.

Claudia’s Ghost

When Claudia’s ghost is called upon to the living realm we see her reeling from complex emotions and has some choice words for Louis and Lestat. How she was in that moment sparked complex emotions and views like:

“Is this Claudia?”

“She would never say those things to Louis.”

“This is what he deserves”

so on and so forth…

From watching this newest episode, I noticed that Claudia’s ghost exhibited some of the traits that are associated with haints.

She’s stuck

A witch hired by Louis and Lestat invokes Claudia from the beyond. Instead of the bittersweet reunion, they are met with anger, grief, and frustration. While reading them to filth, she mentions that they pulled her from a spidery nowhere. This may imply she may be stuck somewhere, as a spider is usually known for trapping things.

She mentions things that happened in previous episodes and seasons, like Louis taking out Bruce, him reading her diaries, or how she would have tripped Armand on the stairs if she wanted Louis to join her in the afterlife. This starts to sound like she may be in a type of purgatory that allows her to observe the “living”, while not being able to move on to whatever is next after death in Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe. This would align with the lore of how haints are stuck, unable to move on to the next life.

Why is She Stuck

There are numerous reasons why haints are stuck. One reason could be, because of how much anger they carry, whether towards others or something else, can keep them tethered. Another reason is that they have unfinished business. Claudia fits both things.

Right before she died, she made a promise to get revenge upon the vampires before her, who condemned her and her love to death. Although everyone died, Armand and Lestat still got away, both playing a hand in her death.

Those last words could be the unfinished business that makes it hard for her to move on. Then, to awaken to one of her killers (her maker at that) with Louis, who should have died with her. Together once again with the lover who dropped him from the sky, while she can’t even find the one person who truly loved and saw her.

Keep in mind based pn her words she watches them get to carry on with life, and use her name to justify whatever they do imagine. Impose their “idea” on her memory. Even get someone who looks like her to mimic her.. That’s barely scratching the surface of what she’s been through cause of them.

Both in life and death they could not let her rest The anger she has is beyond warranted, and I can only imagine the type of pain that causes her, but it’s that right there, that deep anger and sadness that keeps her stuck. That makes her a haint.

Poltergeist Activity

There is a final trait I want to mention that proves Claudia’s haint status. Before Merrick Mayfair invokes Claudia, she creates a circle with a substance, I’m assuming is salt, to keep her in to protect the people buying her services (this would be Louis and Lestat).

Spirits or as we say it haints, in this universe can be quite dangerous and deadly (whether on purpose or indirectly). Two prime examples being Lasher from Mayfair Witches and Amel. So, there should be no surprise with the anger she has that upon being called Claudia busts Merrick’s head onto the table for disturbing her. Knocking Merrick’s tooth right on loose.

It didn’t take long before she effortlessly broke from the circle and caused objects to fly across the room. A classic case of poltergeist activity. She is coming in hot with anger, and her now being in the living realm with that energy causes her to manifest as a haint.

Haints are known as malevolent beings that harm the living. Based on what Claudia says in this scene she basically admits she could have harmed/killed Louis if she wanted to, but didn’t because she did not want to deal with him in the afterlife. This adds on to aspect of haints observing and (negatively) interacting with the living. Her anger plus the poltergeist activity equals a haint in the making.

Conclusion

These are all the traits I noticed when watching ‘Lestat’. I hope these traits can allow you to see what I saw when watching this episode, and to see what’s to look through the lens of a Hoodoo practicioner. Even if you are merely interested in this from a history or folkloric lens, I hope this article serves as a glimpse into our world ultizing modern media.

Hoodoo, African American folklores, or even looking more broadly at Afro-spirituality and tales are often left out from global supernatural tales, both fiction and non-fiction. This means our worldviews, past and present, are being left out even if our influences are echoed in media,

So, with this episode I was happy to see a scene with a séance, a Voodoo practicioner, and Claudia’s spirit. Seeing her spirit started with a question and ended with an answer: is Claudia a haint? -> Claudia is a haint.

Her scene was a bittersweet experience, finally seeing her again, but in a state that shows that she didn’t get the peace a lot of us fans were hoping for. However, there is hope that maybe eventually she’ll be able to move on. Looking at it from a woo woo lens, there’s a view that spirits can still be elevated and can heal even in the afterlife.
